Abstract

The background of this research is based on the fact that there are factors that can increase the students motivation in learning English. Those factors are class and curriculum structure, learning environment and teaching methods. One of those teaching methods is by using ice breakers. This research is intended to describe the implementation of ice breakers to increase the students’ motivation in learning English for the seventh grade students of Taman Siswa Junior High School Batu. This research used qualitative research. The data were collected through observation, interview and questionnaires. then they were processed by using data collecting, data reduction and data display. The data analyses show that (a) ice breakers can make the students fun and like English but it cannot increase the students’ motivation in learning English, (b) story is the kind of ice breakers that is commonly chosen, (c) ice breakers do not give high motivation to increase students’ motivation in learning English. The conclusion is the implementation of ice breakers can motivate the seventh grade students of Taman Siswa Junior High School Batu to like English but the ice breakers only  give low motivation for those students to learn English. They have already had their own motivation in learning English, those are to get good marks and to be able to speak English. They like ice breakers only as an interlude during the lesson.
